Theatre director Per Kap Bech Jensen spoke to Dagbladet Holstebro-Struer about where Nordisk Teaterlaboratorium is right now and what is coming.

Nordisk Teaterlaboratorium is finding its own legs. We are not an expensive theatre who burdens the municipality’s finances
After a turbulent time during the generational change at Nordisk Teaterlaboratorium (NTL), the sails are now being set showing the outside world that, yes, there is still a theatre here, and it is doing very well.
In March, Nordisk Teaterlaboratorium (NTL) held the month-long festival “Strange and lovely”, which, according to theatre director Per Kap Bech Jensen, will probably return next year.
The festival, whose name plays on the place where NTL belongs, i.e. Særkærparken (the name of the neighborhood in Holstebro, where the theatre is based), had great significance for the theatre in several ways.
– After all the turbulence that has been around the generational change here, we thought: “How do we open up the theatre to the outside world, which may be in doubt as to whether there is even a theatre anymore?”, explains Per Kap Bech Jensen and continues:
– There is a form of poetry in being “strange and lovely”, and Holstebro has always had the foresight to embrace what was unusual.
NTL would like to remain in that embrace.
Healthy business
In the aftermath of the generational change, there are several rumors – among other things that you are looking at a deficit of two million kroner?
For a moment, Per Kap Bech Jensen looks completely surprised. Then he answers:
– I don’t know where you got that information from? We are not looking at a deficit of millions of kroner! Just like many other cultural institutions post covid, post inflation and post energy crisis, we are not exactly swimming in money. But we are a quite healthy company.
In 2022, NTL had over 500 different activities locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally and – according to Per Kap Bech Jensen – reached over 50,000 people.
– We are 40 employees at the theatre and that corresponds to 29 full-time jobs. The 28 full-time employees are living in Holstebro Municipality, so they pay council tax, have children in the local schools and shop locally. So, what are we for Holstebro Municipality? Well, we are actually very close to being a small surplus, and that is not so bad for a cultural institution, believes Per Kap Bech Jensen.
The theatre receives DKK 6.5 million in regional theatre grants from Holstebro Municipality. Of this, 36 percent is reimbursed by the state. Out of the 6.5 million kroner, the theatre also pays a small million back to the municipality in rent. The theatre’s annual turnover is approximately DKK 16 million.
– And in the past few years, we have applied to Holstebro Municipality’s free funds very few times. For example, we have received seven million kroner for the Greenlandic podcast project, Inuna Radio, from the State. That money is on the State Finance Fund. So, we are not an expensive theatre that challenges the municipal expenses, emphasizes Per Kap Bech Jensen.
The deepest respect
In addition, NTL has a collaboration with Holstebro Municipality, in relation to Inuna Radio, which is described as “a Greenlandic meeting house in the cloud”.
– We have told the municipality that if they had “people on the edge”, Greenlanders who need to be tested for jobs, then we would like very much to take them on an internship or job clarification, explains Per Kap Bech Jensen.
He took over the helm of NTL in 2021. At the turn of 2022-2023, the former director, Eugenio Barba, left the address in Særkærparken and took part of the name, Odin Teatret, with him. Since then, Barba has spoken about the change and among others, has expressed in the newspaper his view on the matter.
Per Kap Bech Jensen has never ever commented the situation – that has been left to his chairwoman of the board, Louise Ejgod. And he still does not want to comment the generational change.
– But I would like to say that I fully recognize Eugenio Barba’s importance to the world of theatre and the importance he has had to the employees he has had here. You cannot put a finger on the enormous amount of work he has done within the theatre he has created. I’d be a liar if I didn’t respect him, and I don’t class myself as such. Professionally, I have nothing but the deepest respect for him, says Per Kap Bech Jensen. Det oprindelige citat siger; jeg ville være et skarn, hvis jeg ikke…
And when NTL with, for example, the Greenlandic project, which over the next three years will create 221 podcasts for Greenlanders living in Denmark, with the NTL leaders’ own words for “a major capacity expansion of what we as a theatre can do with new formats”, then everything happens with a respectful recognition to Barba’s foresight.
– We are going to work more with the freedom of doing things we think are exciting and thinking out of the box. We will never be just a theatre that only shows performances on stage. And Eugenio Barba was good at seeing that before everyone else – he challenged the formats, Per Kap Bech Jensen says.
Festival week 2024
Now NTL has to stand on its two feet, and there are lots of projects in the pipeline, such as the participation in the upcoming Holstebro Pride, to the brand new Landsbyakademiet, which starts in June this year, and to a renewal of the Odin Uge, now called NTL Weeks, that runs for three weeks in August/September and extends the opportunity to share performing arts with each other, thus leading to a performance.
And then there is the Festuge, which will last ten days in 2024, one of three big events in the celebration of Holstebro’s 750th anniversary.
– We currently hold a festival week cafe every two months in the Red Room, where we serve soup and people get to know each other. The first time 80 showed up. It is Søs Banke that coordinates the café, where people the space to meet and brainstorm, explains Per Kap Bech Jensen.
It is clear that NTL, in connection with the Festuge slogan “Connect Us”, will include the Greenlandic National Theatre and on the Asian Culture Center (ACC) in Gwangju in South Korea. In both cases, there is an existing, very healthy collaboration.
– It is going to be a combined force of the people at our theatre, and all the local participants. Do we have a title? Well, we have considered continuing with “strange and lovely”. See, it can do anything, smiles Per Kap Bech Jensen.

Il Nordisk Teaterlaboratorium sta trovando la sua strada
Dopo un periodo turbolento durante il cambio generazionale al Nordisk Teaterlaboratorium (NTL), ora si stanno alzando le vele, mostrando al mondo esterno che sì, c’è ancora un teatro qui, e sta andando molto bene.
Nel mese di marzo, al Nordisk Teaterlaboratorium (NTL) si è svolto il festival “Strange and lovely” della durata di un mese, che, secondo il direttore del teatro Per Kap Bech Jensen, probabilmente tornerà il prossimo anno.
Il festival, il cui nome gioca sul luogo in cui si trova il NTL, ovvero Særkærparken (il nome del quartiere di Holstebro, dove si trova il teatro), ha avuto una grande importanza per il teatro in diversi modi.

NTL vorrebbe rimanere in quell’abbraccio.
Attività sane
In seguito al cambio generazionale, ci sono diversi rumor – tra cui che si stia guardando a un deficit di due milioni di corone?
Per un momento, Per Kap Bech Jensen sembra completamente sorpreso. Poi risponde:
– Non so da dove tu abbia avuto queste informazioni? Non stiamo guardando a un deficit di milioni di corone! Come molte altre istituzioni culturali post covid, post inflazione e post crisi energetica, non nuotiamo esattamente nell’oro. Ma siamo un’azienda abbastanza sana.
Nel 2022, NTL ha avuto oltre 500 diverse attività a livello locale, regionale, nazionale e internazionale e – secondo Per Kap Bech Jensen – ha raggiunto oltre 50.000 persone.
Abbiamo 40 dipendenti al teatro e questo corrisponde a 29 posti di lavoro a tempo pieno. I 28 dipendenti a tempo pieno vivono nel comune di Holstebro, quindi pagano l’imposta comunale, hanno figli nelle scuole locali e fanno acquisti localmente. Quindi, cosa siamo per il comune di Holstebro? Beh, siamo effettivamente molto vicini a essere un piccolo bonus, e questo non è così male per un’istituzione culturale, sostiene Per Kap Bech Jensen.
Riceviamo 6,5 milioni di corone in sovvenzioni per il teatro regionale dal comune di Holstebro. Di questo, il 36 percento è rimborsato dallo stato. Dei 6,5 milioni di corone, il teatro paga anche un milione di corone al comune come affitto. Il fatturato annuale del teatro è di circa 16 milioni di corone.
– E negli ultimi anni, abbiamo chiesto pochissime volte i fondi liberi del comune di Holstebro. Ad esempio, abbiamo ricevuto dallo Stato sette milioni di corone per il progetto podcast groenlandese, Inuna Radio. Quei soldi sono sul bilancio dello Stato. Quindi, non siamo un teatro costoso che sfida le spese comunali, sottolinea Per Kap Bech Jensen.
Il più profondo rispetto
Inoltre, NTL ha una collaborazione con il comune di Holstebro, in relazione a Inuna Radio, che viene descritta come “un centro comunitario groenlandese nell’etere”.
– Abbiamo detto al comune che se ci fossero “persone ai margini”, groenlandesi che devono essere testati per lavori, allora ci piacerebbe molto prenderli come tirocinanti o per la formazione lavorativa, spiega Per Kap Bech Jensen.
Ha preso il timone del NTL nel 2021. Alla fine del 2022, l’ex direttore Eugenio Barba ha lasciato l’indirizzo di Særkærparken e ha portato con sé parte del nome, Odin Teatret. Da allora, Barba ha parlato del cambiamento e ha espresso la sua opinione in questione anche sul nostro quotidiano, tra gli altri.
Per Kap Bech Jensen non ha mai commentato la situazione – che è stata lasciata alla sua presidente del consiglio d’amministrazione, Louise Ejgod. E ancora oggi non vuole commentare il cambiamento generazionale.
– Ma vorrei dire che riconosco pienamente l’importanza di Eugenio Barba per il mondo del teatro e l’importanza che ha avuto per i dipendenti del nostro teatro. Non si può mettere il dito sull’enorme quantità di lavoro che ha fatto all’interno del teatro che ha creato. Sarei uno stupido se non avessi rispetto per quello che ha fatto, e non mi considero tale. Professionalmente, non ho che il più profondo rispetto per lui, dice Per Kap Bech Jensen.
E quando NTL, ad esempio, con il progetto groenlandese, che nei prossimi tre anni creerà 221 podcast per i groenlandesi che vivono in Danimarca, con le parole dei leader del NTL “una grande espansione della capacità di ciò che possiamo fare come teatro con nuovi formati”, allora tutto avviene con un riconoscimento rispettoso della lungimiranza di Barba.
– Lavoreremo di più con la libertà di fare cose che riteniamo interessanti e pensare fuori dagli schemi. Non saremo mai solo un teatro che mostra spettacoli sul palcoscenico. Ed Eugenio Barba è stato bravo a vedere questo prima di tutti gli altri – ha sfidato i formati, dice Per Kap Bech Jensen.
La settimana del festival del 2024
Ora il NTL deve camminare con le proprie gambe, e ci sono molti progetti in cantiere, come la partecipazione al prossimo Holstebro Pride, al nuovissimo Landsbyakademiet, che inizierà a giugno di quest’anno, e al rinnovo della Odin Week, ora chiamata NTL WEEKS, che si svolgerà per tre settimane in agosto/settembre e offrirà l’opportunità di condividere le diverse arti performative, per sfociare poi in uno spettacolo finale.
E poi c’è la Festuge (Festive Week), che durerà dieci giorni nel 2024, uno dei tre grandi eventi nella celebrazione del 750º anniversario di Holstebro.
– Attualmente teniamo un Festival Week Cafe ogni due mesi nel teatro, dove serviamo zuppa e le persone si conoscono. La prima volta si sono presentati 80 persone. È Søs Banke a coordinare il Cafe, dove le persone hanno lo spazio per incontrarsi e fare brainstorming, spiega Per Kap Bech Jensen.
È chiaro che NTL, in relazione allo slogan della Festive Week “Connect Us”, includerà il Teatro Nazionale Groenlandese e il Centro Culturale Asiatico (ACC) di Gwangju in Corea del Sud. In entrambi i casi, c’è una collaborazione esistente e molto salutare.
– Sarà una forza combinata delle persone del nostro teatro e di tutti i partecipanti locali. Se abbiamo un titolo? Beh, abbiamo considerato di continuare con “strange and lovely”. Vedi, può fare qualsiasi cosa, sorride Per Kap Bech Jensen.

El Nordisk Teaterlaboratorium está encontrando su propio camino
Después de un tiempo turbulento tras el cambio generacional en Nordisk Teaterlaboratorium (NTL), las velas se están izando finalmente, mostrando al mundo que sí, todavía hay un teatro aquí y es capaz de funcionar a la perfección.
En marzo, Nordisk Teaterlaboratorium (NTL) celebró el festival de un mes de un mes de duración “Extraño y encantador”. Un festival que, según el director de teatro Per Kap Bech Jensen, probablemente se repetirá el próximo año. El festival, cuyo nombre hace referencia al lugar en el que se encuentra NTL, es decir, Særkærparken (el nombre del barrio de Holstebro donde se sitúa el teatro), tuvo una gran importancia para la institución en varios aspectos.
– Después de toda la turbulencia que ha habido en torno al cambio generacional aquí, nos preguntábamos: “¿Cómo abrimos el teatro a un mundo exterior que posiblemente duda sobre si todavía hay un teatro aquí?”, explica Per Kap Bech Jensen y continúa:
– Hay algo poético en ser “extraño y encantador”, y Holstebro siempre ha sido visionario a la hora de abrazar lo inusual.

Negocio saludable
Después del cambio generacional surgieron varios rumores, entre ellos que se esperaba un déficit de dos millones de coronas danesas.
Por un momento, Per Kap Bech Jensen parece completamente sorprendido. Luego responde:
– No sé de dónde obtuvo esa información. ¡No estamos esperando un déficit de millones de coronas! Como muchas otras instituciones culturales después del covid, la inflación y la crisis energética, no nadamos en dinero precisamente. Pero somos una empresa bastante saludable.
En 2022, NTL organizó más de 500 actividades diferentes a nivel local, regional, nacional e internacional y, según Per Kap Bech Jensen, alcanzó a más de 50.000 personas.
– Somos 40 empleados en el teatro, 29 de los cuales trabajan a jornada completa. Los 28 empleados a tiempo completo viven en el municipio de Holstebro, por lo que pagan impuestos municipales, tienen hijos en las escuelas locales y compran localmente. Entonces, ¿qué somos para el municipio de Holstebro? Bueno, en realidad estamos muy cerca de tener un pequeño superávit, y eso no está mal para una institución cultural, cree Per Kap Bech Jensen.
El teatro recibe 6,5 millones de coronas danesas en subvenciones teatrales regionales del municipio de Holstebro. De esto, el 36 por ciento es reembolsado por el estado. De los 6,5 millones de coronas, el teatro también paga un millón de coronas en alquiler al municipio. El volumen de negocios anual del teatro es de aproximadamente 16 millones de coronas danesas.
– Y en los últimos años, hemos solicitado muy pocas veces los fondos gratuitos del municipio de Holstebro. Por ejemplo, hemos recibido siete millones de coronas para el proyecto de podcast groenlandés, Inuna Radio, del Estado. Ese dinero está en la Ley de Finanzas del Estado. Con esto quiero decier que no somos un teatro caro que plantea un reto para los gastos municipales, enfatiza Per Kap Bech Jensen.
El más profundo respeto
Además, NTL ha iniciado una colaboración con el Municipio de Holstebro a través del proyecto Inuna Radio, que se describe como “un lugar de reunión groenlandés en la nube”.
– Comunicamos al municipio que si tenían personas en riesgo de exclusión o ciudadanos groenlandeses que necesitaran insertarse en el ámbito laboral, nos gustaría mucho contratarlos como becarios y proporcionarles formación en el campo, explica Per Kap Bech Jensen.
Él tomó las riendas de NTL en 2021. Entre finales de 2022 y principios de 2023, el exdirector del espacio, Eugenio Barba, abandonó la dirección de Særkærparken y se llevó parte del nombre, Odin Teatret, con él. Desde entonces, Barba ha hablado sobre el cambio y, entre otras cosas, ha expresado su opinión al respecto en el periódico.
Per Kap Bech Jensen nunca ha comentado la situación, eso se lo ha dejado a la presidenta de la junta, Louise Ejgod. Y todavía no quiere comentar el cambio generacional.
– Pero me gustaría decir que reconozco completamente la importancia de Eugenio Barba para el mundo del teatro y la importancia que ha tenido para los empleados del teatro. No se puede poner en duda la enorme cantidad de trabajo que ha llevado a cabo dentro del teatro que ha creado. Sería un tonto si no tuviera respeto por lo que ha hecho, y no me considero como tal. Profesionalmente, no tengo más que el más profundo respeto por él, dice Per Kap Bech Jensen.
NTL continua funcionando pues, por ejemplo, con el proyecto groenlandés, que en los próximos tres años creará 221 podcasts para groenlandeses que viven en Dinamarca para, en palabras de los líderes de NTL “una importante expansión de la capacidad de lo que nosotros como teatro podemos hacer con nuevos formatos”, con un reconocimiento respetuoso a la perspicacia de Barba.
– Vamos a trabajar con la libertad de hacer cosas que nos parecen emocionantes y pensando fuera de los límites tradicionales. Nunca seremos solo un teatro que muestra actuaciones en el escenario. Y Eugenio Barba fue capaz de ver eso antes que nadie, desafiando los formatos existentes, dice Per Kap Bech Jensen.
Semana Festiva 2024
Ahora NTL tiene que mantenerse por sí solo y hay muchos proyectos en marcha, como la participación en el próximo Pride de Holstebro, la organización de la nueva Landsbyakademiet, que comienza en junio de este año, y en la readaptación de la antigua Odin Week, ahora llamada Semanas NTL, un taller que durará tres semanas en agosto/septiembre y brindará la oportunidad de experimentar las artes escénicas en comunidad, derivando esto en un espectáculo conjunto.
También está la Festuge, que durará diez días en 2024, uno de los tres grandes eventos en la celebración del 750 aniversario de Holstebro.
– Actualmente hospedamos un Cafe de la Semana Festiva cada dos meses en el teatro, donde servimos sopa y la gente se conoce. La primera vez asistieron 80 personas. Es Søs Banke quien coordina el café, donde la gente tiene un espacio para conocerse y hacer lluvia de ideas, explica Per Kap Bech Jensen.
Está claro que NTL, en conexión con el lema “Conéctanos” de la semana festiva, incluirá al Teatro Nacional de Groenlandia y al Centro de Cultura Asiática (ACC) en Gwangju, Corea del Sur. En ambos casos, existe una colaboración activa y muy saludable.
– Será una esfuerzo combinado entre la gente de nuestro teatro y de todos los participantes locales. ¿Tenemos un título? Bueno, hemos considerado continuar con “Extraño y encantador”. Verás, puede hacer casi cualquier cosa, sonríe Per Kap Bech Jensen.
