An old man and an old woman, refugees, expelled or displaced... it does not matter.
What matters is that they are two Palestinians waiting to return to the homes which they were expelled from in 1948.
Here they are, dreaming of that day, thinking about their right to return to their homes. Sometimes they wait, other times they lose hope, but they keep on waiting...
The nostalgia boils in their hearts just like the Meramieh "Sage" boils on fire. The scent of Meramieh carries them to the homeland... where they lived.
They recall personal stories which are still rooted in their memory...
The warmth of nostalgia is in their hearts, just like the sage simmering over the fire. The smell of sage takes them back to their homeland... to the place where they lived. They recall personal stories that are still in their memories...
Meramieh means sage and it is considered a healing herb in Palestine.

Meramieh is supported by the Danish Arts Foundation and Sportgoodsfonden

Meramieh is based on interviews collected for the book Living Memories, published in 2017 in collaboration between Al-Rowat for Studies & Research and the Danish House in Palestine. The director Mirna Sakhleh has unfolded 6 stories from different narrators. The performance can be described as ‘documentary theatre’ and is, like the book, created to keep alive the stories from the period, which are often handed down orally from generation to generation.

Al-Harah Theatre
Al-Harah Theater is a non-profit organisation founded in 2005 and based in Beit Jala, Palestine. The theatre has won several awards through participation in various international and local festivals. The theatre last toured Denmark in 2022.
