The show is about Maja, who has moved to a new place where she doesn't feel at home — she is angry and sad and misses her friends. She is sent up into the attic, where she tries to build herself a safe cave. Here, a magical creature appears: a sofa! It also wants space, and it isn't easy, but together the two find the right melody. Maja discovers that a friend can be different from herself — without being dangerous.

"Maja and the Magic Sofa" speaks to all senses in an engaging universe of sound, smell, quirky surprises and lots of beautiful and melodious music, performed by our three cast members: Mariann Mikkelsen (soprano), Emma Oemann (mezzo-soprano) and Johanne Andersson (cello).

Real sounds from children's own homes have also found their way into Maja's fantasy world. They were collected and recorded by two young students from MGK Syd, and if you listen carefully, you can hear these sounds as part of the music, which was composed by Niels Bjerg and Jonas Bové in 2025.

The show is produced in collaboration with Musikteatret Figaros, and it is aimed at children from about 4 to 9 years old — and of course, their adult companions.

Two public performances will be held at Nordisk Teaterlaboratorium on Saturday, October 4th, after which the show will play at schools and institutions in Holstebro, Thyholm, Herning and Nørre Snede. Later in the year, "Maja and the Magic Sofa" will tour throughout the country.
