Carmen is a free spirit - a woman who insists on sticking to herself and her own path in life. She meets Don José, who is ordered with putting her in prison after a fight - he falls in love with her instead, and she convinces him to let her go. However, his infatuation turns into a dark obsession, as Carmen is more interested in the toreador Escamillo and refuses to give up her newfound freedom.
The opera will be performed by singers Karin Sjöholm, Daniel Holmberg and Mikkel Thomsen, accompanied by Andreas Nielsen on Spanish guitar. It will be a short 35-minute version that touches on the main themes of the play. A narrator guides the audience through the action as it unfolds on stage.
The iconic opera from 1875 is still relevant today because it opens up a conversation about gender, equality and respect. The Carmen character represents a woman who demands equality and the right to control her own life, while the male characters in the opera believe otherwise.
The performance is aimed at children aged 11 years and older and their adults.
